Well today has been a busy one.
Rewired my whole house and changed the network for the better with an addition of a new server.
Also moved my room around and got new lights.
Well let’s start with the server. Recently I have donated my old desktop PC to my sister and in return acquired her older computer. It was a waste to shove this in the bin so today I converted it into a nice server for my network.
Taking into account the specification of the server and the tasks I want it to do I decided that Linux would be the best operating system.
I had a look on the net and decided on Ubuntu. People said that 6.06 was the way to go as 7.04 wasn’t really playing nice and had bugs. Me being me have always liked the latest stuff so went ahead and downloaded the ISO of 7.04. Burned to disk and installed on the server. It went without a hitch and choose “beta” (as in the Greek alphabet) as my server name for reasons explained later in this post.
The installer finished and I was presented with a terminal command. (Remember this is the server edition that does not have a GUI) I panicked at first but after many step by step guides found by Google and forums I finally got things set up and installed.
I am now running the following:
Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04
Apache 2
PHP 5
Zend Optimizer
GD
ImageMagik
PHPMyAdmin
MySQL
The reason it is called “beta” and not “alpha” is because I hope to add a further server to stack on this one to run an Windows Operating system purely for file storage as I could not get Samba to work correctly on this box. Don’t want to run Windows on this one because it’s not powerful enough and Linux does what I want just now much more efficiently than any Windows Box would.
Here is a little picture of the soon to be Declan’s data center.

Next up is my new lights. Got these off eBay a while back. Quite expensive £10 GBP per bulb and didn’t like them at the time so they got put in storage. Today while tidying my room I came across them and put them backup and now I think there sexy as!
Here is a picture of the new l33t lighting:

Lastly my room got tidied out today and now my desk can actually have a computer on it.
Again to keep the trend going here is a little picture to put your grubby paws over:

Thanks to Jamie who assisted me in setting up the server and getting the room into an non bomb site state.
Well sorry for the mega long post. If you got this far cheers for reading and make sure you check back for more soon.
