No Laptop For A Few Days

Unfortunatley my laptop has been freezing and a few seconds later displaying some weird graphical corruption. :S

Fortunatley I am well within my first year of warrenty so called Acer and they arranged to have it picked up next day. The support guy seems to think it’s either HDD as they are having issues with some batches or the RAM.

I always thought it was the HDD but now my mind has changed to RAM after getting actual Windows error dialogs last night telling me the RAM was not writable etc. :@

DHL are coming to pick it up to day which I am glad about as they are a rather reliable courier, I know this due to past experiances getting a digital camera repaired. :|

Hopefully Acer do not too long to dignose the problem and get it sorted and returned back to me as I currently don’t have a desktop so I am left computerless for quite a few days by the look of things! :(

Will post information as I recieve it. :P

New Home Server And More

Well today has been a busy one.

Rewired my whole house and changed the network for the better with an addition of a new server. :)

Also moved my room around and got new lights. :D

Well let’s start with the server. Recently I have donated my old desktop PC to my sister and in return acquired her older computer. It was a waste to shove this in the bin so today I converted it into a nice server for my network.

Taking into account the specification of the server and the tasks I want it to do I decided that Linux would be the best operating system.

I had a look on the net and decided on Ubuntu. People said that 6.06 was the way to go as 7.04 wasn’t really playing nice and had bugs. Me being me have always liked the latest stuff so went ahead and downloaded the ISO of 7.04. Burned to disk and installed on the server. It went without a hitch and choose “beta” (as in the Greek alphabet) as my server name for reasons explained later in this post.
The installer finished and I was presented with a terminal command. (Remember this is the server edition that does not have a GUI) I panicked at first but after many step by step guides found by Google and forums I finally got things set up and installed.

I am now running the following:
Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04
Apache 2
PHP 5
Zend Optimizer
GD
ImageMagik
PHPMyAdmin
MySQL

The reason it is called “beta” and not “alpha” is because I hope to add a further server to stack on this one to run an Windows Operating system purely for file storage as I could not get Samba to work correctly on this box. Don’t want to run Windows on this one because it’s not powerful enough and Linux does what I want just now much more efficiently than any Windows Box would.

Here is a little picture of the soon to be Declan’s data center. :D

Next up is my new lights. Got these off eBay a while back. Quite expensive £10 GBP per bulb and didn’t like them at the time so they got put in storage. Today while tidying my room I came across them and put them backup and now I think there sexy as!

Here is a picture of the new l33t lighting:

Lastly my room got tidied out today and now my desk can actually have a computer on it. :P

Again to keep the trend going here is a little picture to put your grubby paws over:

Thanks to Jamie who assisted me in setting up the server and getting the room into an non bomb site state. :D

Well sorry for the mega long post. If you got this far cheers for reading and make sure you check back for more soon. :D

Nearly Summer Holidays

Well sorry for the lack of posts but I have been doing my highers courses at school.

As of tomorrow there is only 5 days before I leave for the summer holidays. :D

7 weeks of absolute rest. :P

Nothing much been going on really but have been redesigning some websites and my photo shop skills have improved. :D

Gave my desktop computer to my sister because I didn’t use it much but now I am starting to miss it. :( Getting new one in August with some uber powerful components hopefully.

Need to phone Virgin Media tomorrow about the crap speeds during peak times. Sometime were running as slow as 0.1MB/s. But at night it jumps up to the normal and fast rate. :|

OMG! Safari for Windows

Yep it’s official. Released at WDDC 2007.

Here is a screen shot of my blog running in it.

New Desktop GUI

Well today I have messing about with Windows Blinds 5 on my laptop and I have to say it’s amazing!

I have now settled on a look and it’s yummy. Hasn’t affected my performance at all so that’s a good thing.

Below is a screen shot of my beloved new GUI.

New Skin

Well sorry about the lack of posts but I have been busy in 5th year starting all my highers.

It’s going pretty well but the work load has increased hundreds compared to standard grades. :|

Nothing really much happened apart from school although I did manage to setup my own Ubuntu server and it’s running nicley although I do miss the Windows OS on it. :|

Sometime next week I will probaly reinstall Windows on it so I can get the file shares back as I cannot get Samba running under linux. :(

And as the title of this post suggests the blog now has a new skin. I liked the fact that the blog looked the same as the rest of the site but this skin was too nice to give a miss. :d

That’s all for this week. :)

Will try and post more regualry but I can’t promise anything. :P

First Day Back At School

Well today I went back to school to start my highers.

The classes I got put into arn’t too bad but some leave a bit to be considered. Hopefully all the tossers are gone soon anyways as if they continue to act like they do they won’t last long.

Got my V+ box from Virgin Media today and it’s absolutley tiny. Gets me over a hundred channels so it’s pretty useful. Best of all it was 100% free on my current Virgin Media contract.

Over the weekend The Vienna Forums has been relaunched with a completley new look. Pop over and register it’s free and only takes two ticks.

Last Day Of Holidays

Well it’s official. This is the last day of my holidays. Back to school on Monday to start my higher courses. :P

Kinda glad as I have been bored the past few days and the whole school thing shouldn’t be that bad as it’s all subjects I like as I picked them. :P

The subjects I have picked are below if you have forgotten or just not read older blog posts. :D

Computing
Modern Studies
English
Business Managment
Technical Studies

On the other hand I have ordered myself a Virgin TV kit that I think uses my broadband to provide me with some l33t channels and other cool services. :)

Just leaving to Tesco’s to get a padded envelope to post back my broken iPod USB cable to Apple via UPS as my new one got delivered today. Great service by the way Apple! :D
